The highlight matte is best used together with the hue and shadow mattes, but can be used with any of the mattes. When keying transparent objects the highlight matte can be very usefull. It can also do difference keying.

Threshold

When adjusting the threshold, the area which will not be included in the matte will turn cyan.

The shadow matte is best used together with the hue and highlight mattes, but can be used with any of the mattes. Great for extracting shadows from the background, but also great for adding detail to a matte. It can also do difference keying.

The hue matte is basically the same as a chroma keyer. It's designed to be used together with the shadow and highlight mattes for best results. You can use difference keying on the hue matte.

Hue width

Here you adjust the width(0-360°) of the hue which is to be transparent. When adjusting the threshold, the area which will not be included in the matte will turn magenta.

This is where you adjust the controls used for the detail matte. It's possible to use it alone without the color difference matte, but in some difficult situations it'll be an advantage to combine both. When you work on the detail matte it's a good idea to disable the color difference matte(you do that on the toolbar). Otherwise it might be difficult to see what you're doing.

This is where you create and edit masks. The masks are based on Bezier-splines and very flexible. Use them to create garbage mattes and more. You can add an unlimited amount of masks, only limited by memory. Of course rendering will get progressively slower as you add lots of masks. Masks can be added/deleted and moved up/down using the rotoscoping menu, or by right-clicking a mask. You can add several masks(which can either be positive or negative) of the same type, to make more complex shapes …
